Coming up with music is difficult. Ask me, I don’t know how to. My non-existent musical talent aside, so many sitcoms have just had marvelous intro songs, or theme songs, or whatever you wanna call it. They’re definitely always in my ears, so now I want to you hear them too.
Community
Not much to say here, just a chill song with all the creatives and visual of a community college. Man I must’ve watched this one at least a thousand times. So it’s safe to assume that I’m the reason why they have so many views.
Modern Family
There’s just something about it. It has an amazing beat, it’s catchy, it’s simple and different at the same time. Absolutely no lyrics but the entire composition has so much energy. Hatsoff to the composer.
By the way, if you’ve taken the trouble to listen to an audiobook on Modern Family, one of it’s creators, Christopher Lloyd, mentions that they had two versions. One which was soft and mellow and sweet, and the other was this. Personally, I’m glad they chose this.
Also, there’s a special version played on an accordion for the Paris episode.
30 Rock
Another one with no lyrics, just banger music. It introduces all the characters and has fabulous energy. Lord knows I’ve heard this one on repeat over a million times. An interesting fact is that this song, along with the background score for the show, was composed by Jeff Richmond, Tina Fey’s husband, who also had a few cameos on the show.
Time to buy me some coffee!
Arrested Development
Oh man, how do you introduce the plot of the show, along with its characters, with some really catchy and quirky music? Well, Arrested Development’s got you covered. I cannot tell you how much I love this intro. If it ends up at an Opera house someday, I won’t be surprised.
For the season 4 intros, when the episodes were on centered on individual characters, the music was also composed in a way to reflect the characters. Like for George Michael, you could hear a wood block.
What We Do In The Shadows
First of all, the song has just the right qualities to become an intro for a show that’s a mockumentary on vampires navigating life in the present day and age. It also takes us through the many different forms the vampires dawned over their very, very long lives. And Norma Tanega, you have my heart.
Freaks and Geeks
Another great way of showing who’s in the cast with some great music. Freaks and Geeks, like many have already said, was way ahead of its time. And it sure was with the music as well. Having the cast pose for their school album photos was just the right idea, for the show in a school.
Two and a Half Men
Men, men, men, men, manly, men, men, men. Boy, if you want a tune to be stuck in your head, it better be this one. It’s also great to see young Jake grow up in every season. How can you take just one word and compose the tune and background score of an entire show, MAN has my jaw dropped.
P.S. I preferred the theme song when with Charlie over the one with Kutcher.
If you disagree with my list so far, the best way you can get back at me is by buying me some coffee.
The Big Bang Theory
What better way to make an intro for a show titled ‘The Big Bang Theory’, than to actually take you from the Big Bang to present day? It’s iconic, it’s catchy, and it’s a banger.
Veep
This one has split people, as far as I and a friend of mine is concerned. I love it, it’s presidential, vice presidential at least, but my friend finds it too loud. Who’s side are you on? Also, what a great intro, that takes us through VP Selina Meyer’s background, from her rise, to her fall, or her plateauing maybe?
Desperate Housewives
I know it’s not a sitcom, but I think it’s iconic, and so did the Emmy’s and that’s why it’s here. It has a great song, great animated visuals of women in various artworks, and it ends with the four ladies holding apples. I was so disappointed when they dropped this song for a shortened version from season 4. Why you do this Marc Cherry?
Well, that’s my list. I know it’s long, but there’s more, so stay tuned for another one. And while you listen to some great music, buy me some coffee?
The visuals that accompanied each intro music were stunning. I like how the making of the intro is an art by itself. Thanks for compiling this list Astle - so inspiring!
